Today is my first Deepavali, in a new country, and minus
new clothes..But not feeling sad..coz even thoguh you miss
the fun that you have back at home,celebrating deepavali
here is a bit of a different experience.
The Indian community here- the perfect blend of first
generation IT contractors like me, and the UK born confused
Desi's celbrate Deepavali (or Diwali) as the festival is more
popularly known in much more interesting ways.
First thing is the use of crackers. Here we do not have the
liberty of bursting crackers and most of them make do with the
you tube version of recorded fireworks..Off scourse we have
controlled fireworks here also, but not like the fun we have
back home..and with crackers costing 2 for a pound, i think
this is the better option.
New clothes and sweets and fun is more or less the same as
back in India.Here people make more of an effort to get together
and share the joy
You can definitely see an interesting mixture of customs though..
we have all the desi dances, Bhangra, and even Dandiya on Diwali
day :)
Atleast this is one occasion, when every Indian voluntarly
becomes a cultural ambassedor, and doesnt mind being an Indian
even if its just for a day.
